Reimagine your "retirement!" Get where you want to be easier, faster and less stress
Retirement around the corner? Don't do what I did...I learned the hard way that I was not ready! Avoid disappointment...
I hope this story will both serve as a bit of an eye opener and an inspiration
for you as you consider your retirement.
I'd like to tell you the story of my Grandpa Charlie. He was very blessed...he got to do what he loved for several decades.
But, guess what? No one else knew that he was doing exactly what he wanted
and loving every minute of it. He had an amazing life!
There were a lot of clues. Watching him interact with his customers, his vendors and all the kids who came into his general store--mostly because of the huge candy counter. He was always smiling...often with a little twinkle in his eye--and sometimes a wink and a grin.
That was my clue that he was joking or pulling someone's leg.
He still candled eggs in the back of the store...allowed those who'd had a bad year on the farm to run a tab, trusting that they would pay when they could (and most did)...and knew everything about the people and families who were his customers. And...He. Loved. It!
Grandpa had it all...purpose, community, identity, significance. "The Life of Riley" as they might have said back then!
He just plain loved what he was doing. Then, the unthinkable happened!
Loving, well-meaning family members decided it was time for Grandpa Charlie to retire and "enjoy life."
WHAT? He was enjoying life every moment of every day.
Well, he fought them for awhile, but it was a losing battle. I watched my vibrant, happy grandpa become a different man...
He never enjoyed the "honeymoon period" many retirees experience following the initial transition from what they were doing to the next phase of their lives. He didn't like to travel; in fact, Grandma often went with our family because she did enjoy it.
He never really had any hobbies, other than playing cards with friends occasionally.
He was experiencing loss and felt lost. I think he felt insignificant. His identity was gone.
He no longer had a purpose. His days were empty.
He had no structure...the relationships he loved with his customers and vendors
were gone...he had no sense of purpose...he truly was lost with no idea what to do about it.
He didn't even like TV or reading...he would sit in his recliner, the TV just noise in the background,
and think. (I think he was remembering the good times...but we'll never know for sure.)
Unfortunately, his story doesn't end happily. Before too long, my grandpa
entered a nursing home...and not too much longer after that he passed away.
I'd like you to take a couple things away from this story. First, make sure you identify and focus on what matters most to you...
Be intentional! Make deliberate, informed decisions about what you want to do. And, let others know. Keep those you love and well-meaning people in your life informed of what you want and your intentions.
Live life like my grandfather did when he had it all!
Live your life on purpose...enjoying every single moment!
Do what you love and love what you do...it's your life! You know better than anyone what matters most to you and what you want to do.
Although I didn't know this at the time, I think it was at this time that I thought
(but hadn't made a deliberate decision yet) that I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others and do what I could to make sure retirees enjoy their ext phase to the fullest!
I want to use my experience, my missteps, my knowledge and a system and process
for you to get to those decisions and move forward on your journey to the life you want, doing what you love.

set goals...and take action!

I don't know about you, but I want to live my life based on this Oscar Wilde quote:
"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty, well-preserved body; but rather to skid in broadside, in a cloud of dust, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow! What a ride!" That will tell me I've lived my life fully, on purpose and the way I want to--and I will have made a positive impact along the way.
I'm ready to go...are you?
